Smart Museums

About the Project

SmARt Museum
Using augmented reality (AR) to share collection items.

(f)ITcubator n.o. is implementing a project called “smARt MÚZEUM”, the main goal of which is to create and implement an application that will share museum collection items via augmented reality (AR) technology on a regular mobile device anywhere there is a data connection available. The pilot implementation of this option will be in cooperation with the Museum in Kežmarok and the Ľubovňa Museum in Stará Ľubovňa. In the future, all museums and galleries in Slovakia can use the application and present their valuable artifacts and museum objects in this form, which will be more accessible to the wider public even in risky periods marked by restrictions.

The project activities simultaneously directly and effectively mitigate the adverse effects and impacts of the corona crisis:
– protection of the main target groups (senior communities, residents with health limitations, school students, domestic and foreign tourists) from coronavirus
– secondary target groups do not spread the coronavirus and at the same time have access to education, to the preservation of cultural heritage, and to enrich their free time with culture
– gain access to valuable historical knowledge about Slovakia
– from a tourism perspective, this form can maintain contact with visitors from abroad even in the event of an unfavorable development of the coronavirus situation, which directly fulfills the cross-border impact of the project and its
activities after successful implementation.

The project began in 09/2020, completion and implementation is planned for 12/2020. (f)ITcubator n.o. requested support for the project through the Call of the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic in the form of an Application for a subsidy for a project aimed at supporting regional development for territorial cooperation entities for 2020.

The SmARt MUSEUM continues at a rapid pace

Work on the implementation of the “smARt MUSEUM” project continues at a rapid pace. The goal of the project activities is to create an application that will share museum collection items via augmented reality (AR) technology on a regular mobile device anywhere a data connection is available. The proposed application will be structured and designed for intuitive operation. Each exhibit displayed in augmented reality will be able to be rotated, zoomed, listened to brief information and context, or read. All information will be in at least 2 languages. The search for exhibits will be structured by period, name, use, etc.

(f)ITcubator n.o. concluded a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Museum in Kežmarok and the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica. By signing the memorandum, both museums committed to actively cooperating with (f)ITcubator n.o. in the implementation of the “smARt MÚZEUM” project. The role of museums will be to select collection items in digital form and ensure their sharing. The proposed application has high growth potential. In November 2015, the national Digital Museum project was completed, which resulted in the digitization of more than 174 thousand objects in museum collections. These digitized collection items are stored in data repositories and are practically unused by the public. One option is to make this digital content available to the general public in the form of augmented reality on commonly used mobile devices. Making museum collection items accessible is of great importance, especially in this pandemic era. If you can’t visit the museum due to quarantine, see it at home. Augmented reality is a progressive tool also in the field of education and teaching systems. The experience of visual 3-dimensional perception is written more deeply into memory. At the same time, it arouses interest in history and deepens historical awareness. The “smARt MÚZEUM” application will be universally applicable to other museums and galleries. With the gradual cumulative filling of the collection with items located in the deposits, both the professional and lay public will have the opportunity to view them. The idea of implementing the project will also be supported by the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic.

We have prepared a TV spot smARt MÚZEUM

…if you can’t go to the museum, see it at home! As part of the project, we prepared a presentation video TV spot that, in one minute, informs about the purpose and significance of the idea of introducing a “visit” to the museum even in times when objective reasons do not allow it. The use is intended not only for the young generation, who are accustomed to their smartphones. The application is intuitively set up for seamless use and will allow sharing of selected museum items even among senior enthusiasts and all cultural enthusiasts.

About smARt MUSEUM for the professional public

Via online conference call on 21.12. We will inform representatives of the professional community about the implementation and overall intention and purpose of the project. A brief summary, focus, and future significance of the project will be presented by the project’s expert guarantor. The application creator will present a brief instruction for the smooth functioning of the application and the importance of the project from an innovation perspective and the need for education in this form in the future.

The smARt MUSEUM is a reality

Together with project partners and with financial support from the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic, we created an application, which shares selected museum collection items through augmented reality (AR) technology.

“There are hundreds of thousands of collection items in Slovak museums, and tens of thousands of them are digitized. The future is new technologies. The smARt MÚZEUM application allows you to share collection items directly at your home using augmented reality technology. This technology is also a modern and progressive educational tool. Anyone, anywhere in the world, will gain access to the exhibits.” – Igor Wzoš, expert guarantor of the project.

“AKULAR is a global expert in the field of augmented reality and the supplier of the smARt MÚZEUM application, which can be easily downloaded to your smartphone or tablet. The exhibits are then visualized directly on your phone. This allows users to access objects intuitively and in even more detail than directly in a museum. Thanks to augmented reality, the future of modern education is becoming a reality. “ – Ján Hrončák, founder of AKULAR.

The project is perceived by the implementation team as a pilot project. The vision is to expand the “tour” of an unlimited number of interesting exhibits from Slovak museums, and to use them in education, not just in schools.

We thank our partners – the Museum in Kežmarok, the Ľubovňa Museum – Castle in Stará Ľubovňa, the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica, the East Slovak Museum in Košice for their cooperation and openness to new possibilities for disseminating the rarities of our cultural heritage to everyone without exception or restrictions.
